The rain arrived shortly before the start and quickly saturated the track and accidents were inevitable. A lengthy safety car period followed and Nyblaeus and Welch were the only ones to take advantage of this 'free' pitstop opportunity.
With the mandatory 3 minute driver change and refueling stop completed, Welch managed to rejoin the field while remaining on the same lap giving him an instant advantage. Welch would pit again under another safety car as his maximum driving time was up in a text book example of racing strategy.
Worsening conditions meant the red flag was waved after two hours and 15 minutes. The Healey was still in the lead but it would be Nils-Fredrik Nyblaeus who took the chequered flag, a lap ahead of the rest of the field.
Jeremy Welch said "We were the first people to do refuelling and a driver change under the safety car and that was the plan all along. I'm surprised no-one else thought of that! I must say that these conditions are perfect for a Healey."
