Demanding weather condition resulted in many unexpected incidents on the race track, but also fantastic results achieved for drivers and cars supported by Denis Welch Motorsport.
Congratulations to team Mark Pangborn and Jeremy Welch for an impressive performance in the GT and Sports Car Cup race. After qualifying eleventh on the dry sunny track, Jeremy started the race in the pouring rain and dynamically moved to a high 2nd position to hand the car to Mark. With the fast changing track and safety car periods the team dropped to 15th position, at that point Jeremy took over the steering wheel again. In the heavy rain showers and a very close race he worked up to an amazing 5th position, leaving behind Jaguar E-types, AC Cobras and Aston Martin's - you can watch the first 9 laps of the GT&SCC race (video below). Team Pangborn/Welch in Healey KVS484, finished 5th overall and 1st in the class!
Tony Worthington and Mark Midgley qualified 34th, to start the GTSCC race from the 17th row on the grid. During the race Tony's Healey 3000 was involved in a collision with the Singer's team MGB as it was leaving the pit lane and spun, as a result team Worthington/Midgley had to retire from the race.
Three cars supported by DWM took part in the prestigious RAC Woodcote Trophy race for sports cars from the Pre-'56 era and ran smoothly from the start to the crossing line. Karsten Le Blanc in his Healey 100S, qualified 7th and kept this position in the race, finishing 7th overall and 3rd in the class. Tarek Mahmoud enjoyed the race in his new Austin-Healey 100/4 to finish 14th. Team Corfield/Welch came 19th overall and 7th in the class - an electrical problem at the start put the team 3 laps down!
Saturday morning was very busy for Martyn Corfield in the Healey Endurance Car. Qualifying sessions on the Indy Circuit started in the early morning, Martyn qualified 14th in the Equipe GTS race and a great 6th position for the AMOC ‘50s race - on the second lap the Healey had a collision with Dominic Spacer’s Triumph TR4 which caused serious damage to the Endurance Car, putting into question some of the later starts. The Denis Welch Motorsport team reacted very quickly and worked till late on Saturday to fix the car, so we were all happy to see the Endurance Car racing again on Sunday.
The sunny dry weather during the qualifying session for the AMOC ‘50s race on Sunday morning resulted in good starting positions on the race grid for Karsten Le Blanc - in 6th and Martyn Corfield in 10th.
After a great start in dry weather condition Karsten's 100S ran smoothly to finsh in a fantastic 5th place overall and 2nd in the class, leaving behind, many Jaguar XK’s. Martyn Corfield didn’t finish the race following a spin into the gravel trap and a close shave with Robert Francis Jaguar XK120 when the heavens opened on paddock hill bend!
Thank you for all your support in what was a great dynamic weekend and our well received sponsorship of the GT&SCC race.
